Coastal engineering develops the fundamentals for the structural and functional design and dimensioning of structures and construction measures in coastal areas. The field of activity includes the determination of input variables (mainly water levels and sea state), investigations into the protective function and stability of solid and filled structures (breakwaters, revetments, quay facilities, etc.) and calculations of sediment dynamics.

Furthermore, the effects of structures and construction measures on sea state, currents and morphology are investigated and their environmental compatibility is assessed. To solve the diverse and mostly unique problems, extensive facilities are available for conducting hydraulic model tests on sea state and tidal problems in combination with comprehensive numerical simulation programmes.
