German marine research is joining forces: The German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM) and the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM) have officially completed their merger. With the signing of the merger agreement by the boards of both organizations, the foundation for a shared future has been laid.

Through this merger, the expertise and activities of both associations will be consolidated into one central body. The organization will continue to operate under the name German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM). This step followed resolutions passed by the respective general assemblies and carries the full support of the Board of Governors.

As part of the merger, a five-member Board of Directors was elected or confirmed in office to steer the strategic direction of the new DAM:

  • Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs (MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen)

  • Dr. Kerstin Jochumsen (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency)

  • Prof. Dr. Katja Matthes (GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel)

  • Prof. Dr. Torsten Schlurmann (Ludwig-Franzius-Institute, Leibniz University Hannover / Coastal Research Center)

  • Dr. Joachim Harms, who, as the current Chairman, will lead the transition process.

The newly restructured DAM remains dedicated to the sustainable management of coasts, seas, and oceans. By fostering closer networking among stakeholders, the merger aims to strengthen German marine research and further intensify cooperation between science, policy, and society.
