Under the guiding theme "Stronger together – Reflecting on successes in interdisciplinary research," the lecture was embedded in a high-level scientific colloquium. The event impressively demonstrated that modern coastal protection extends far beyond purely structural measures.

- Coastal Engineering: Bas Borsje and Erik Horstman (University of Twente)
In her inaugural lecture, "My coastal ABC: Adaptation, Biodiversity, Coastal protection," Maike Paul offered fascinating insights into her work as a coastal geoecologist. Her research focus lies at the intersection of biology and engineering: she investigates the complex interaction between flexible vegetation and the forces of waves and currents.
Particular attention was paid to her recent work on the parameterization of flexible vegetation and large-scale experiments on wave attenuation of salt marshes under storm flood conditions. A personal highlight of her research is the ecosystem of seagrass meadows—a subject close to her heart, as she works passionately toward a better understanding and restoration of these fascinating habitats in the northern hemisphere.
The official part of the ceremony concluded on a celebratory note with an expression of gratitude to all participants. The entire staff of the Ludwig-Franzius-Institute, as well as the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science, extend their warmest congratulations to Maike Paul on receiving her Venia Legendi (authorization to teach). We are proud to have such a dedicated scientist among our ranks.
The day drew to a festive close with a reception in the hallway of Building 3101. The many internal and external guests took the opportunity to network over drinks, fostering new connections and deepening existing collaborations.
