Award-winning bachelor's thesis
For the period 2023/2024, the Society of Sponsors of the Ludwig Franzius Institute is awarding Ms Vivienne Wegener B.Sc. the Ludwig Franzius Sponsorship Award for her bachelor's thesis in 2023 entitled
‘Creation of a schematic model for calculating the energy input of sea state events in Jedebusen’.
The jury awarded the thesis the prize for the best bachelor's thesis because the award winner methodically and practically addressed a complex hydrodynamic problem with high engineering relevance by developing a schematic model for calculating the energy input of sea state events in the Jadebusen. The decisive factors for the award were, in particular, the well-founded combination of an empirical Matlab approach with a numerical Delft3D model, the comprehensible validation of the results and the clear gain in knowledge for understanding sediment transport and sea state processes in the study area.
Award-winning master's thesis
For the period 2023/2024, the Society of Sponsors of the Ludwig Franzius Institute is awarding Ms Maja Gieseking M.Sc. the Ludwig Franzius Sponsorship Award for her master's thesis in 2024 entitled
‘Numerical investigation of radiation damping and viscous damping of a vertically oscillating structure using OpenFOAM’.
The jury honours this master's thesis because the award winner conducts a sophisticated numerical investigation into the distinction between radiation and viscous damping with a high degree of scientific depth and convincing methodological rigour. The decisive factors for the award were the successful validation of the CFD simulations with model experiments, the well-founded analysis of complex flow phenomena such as vortex shedding, and the clear gain in knowledge for the evaluation of hydrodynamic damping mechanisms in maritime structures.
The team at the Ludwig Franzius Institute also congratulates the award winners on their outstanding achievements.
