The Project "Future Lab Water"

Water is the basis of all life and must therefore be protected as a valuable resource. Coordinated measures by politicians and industry are needed to guarantee water distribution during increasing periods of drought and to be prepared for extreme situations such as flooding. These measures should be supported by further research based on modern water management methods. Digitalisation is essential for this.

That is why the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation are funding the new Future Lab Water at the Centre for Digital Innovations Lower Saxony (ZDIN). With 3.7 million euros in funding, the aim is to further research the digitalisation of water management at an excellent scientific level and make it applicable within five years. The Future Lab Water project consortium includes the disciplines of water management, hydraulic engineering, hydrology, coastal engineering, environmental systems science, computer science, sensor technology, and planning and political sciences.

Geographically, the applicant institutions cover the state of Lower Saxony from the coast to the inland region and the Harz low mountain range. The Ludwig Franzius Institute is contributing to the project with the RiverSnap initiative.
