Within this EU-funded Hydralab+ project, large scale experiments were conducted at the Fast Flow Facility at HR Wallingford, UK, to improve the design of scour protection around offshore wind turbines, as well as future-proofing them against the impacts of climate change. The joint research project is carried out by researchers from Ghent University, the University of Porto, IMDC and Leibniz University Hannover (LuFI). The project focuses on improving design approaches for a dynamically stable scour protection by providing large and intermediate scale experimental data sets as benchmark. Furthermore, the performance of a widely graded single layer scour protection is compared against that of a narrowly graded two-layer setup. In the context of climate change, the behaviour of scour protections is also analysed under extreme wave and current conditions.
